What is Brain Tumor? |
Brain is a soft and spongy mass of tissue. It is protected by the bones of the skull, three thin layers of tissue (meninges) and watery fluid that flows space between the meninges and through spaces (ventricles) within the brain. Brain consists of 3 major parts that are cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. When most normal cells grow old or get damages, they die and new cells take their places.
Malignant brain tumor is a generally more serious and often is a threat to life. Usually, it growth rapidly and crowd or invade the nearby healthy brain tissue. Then, cancer cell may break away from malignant brain tumor and spread to other parts of the brain or to the spinal cord.
What is symptom of Brain Tumor? |
Brain tumor has several symptoms which are their typical symptoms and locations and how they might be treated is different. The symptoms of a brain tumor depend on tumor size, type, and location. Other than that, symptom may be caused when a tumor presses on a nerve or harms a part of the brain. There are several symptom of brain tumor:
- Changes in mood, personality, or ability to concentrate.
- Changes in speech, vision, or hearing
- Headaches (usually worse in the morning)
- Muscle jerking or twitching
- Nausea and vomiting
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- Problems balancing or walking
- Problem with memory
What is risk factor of brain tumor? |
People with certain risk factor are more likely than others to develop a brain tumor. A risk factor may increase the chance of getting a disease. They are several risk factor of brain tumor:
- Age
Usually brain tumors are more common in children and older adults, although people of any age can develop a brain tumor.
- Gender
Men are more likely than women to develop a brain tumor. For meningloma brain tumor are more common in women.
- Home and work exposure
Exposure to solvent, pesticides, oil products, rubber, or vinyl chloride may increase the risk of developing a brain tumor.
- Family History
Some of previous case, brain tumor may be linked to hereditary (genetic) factors or condition.
- Electromagnetic fields
Power lines or from cell phone use have an electromagnetic which may or may not increase the risk of developing a brain tumor. It is better use and promotes the use of a hands-free headset for both adults and children.
- Race and ethnicity
People from northern Europe are more than twice as likely to develop a brain tumor as people in Japan.
- Ionizing radiation
Usually this risk factor is from previous treatment such as ionizing radiation (include x-ray) has increase the possibility to get brain tumor.
- Head Injury and seizures
Head trauma that too serious also cause someone to get brain cancer. Brain tumor can cause seizures and otherwise the seizures also can cause brain tumor.
- N-nitroso compounds
Diet and vitamin supplementation seem to indicate that dietary N-nitroso compounds may raise the risk of both childhood and adult brain tumor. Usually N-nitroso compounds are formed from nitrates found in some cured meats, cigarette smoke and cosmetic.
